Isuzu UTE A-League Ins & Outs: Wanderers captain survives injury scare as Victory regain key trio

aleagues.com.au previews all 6 of the matches in Round 7 of the Isuzu UTE A-League.

The teams are in ahead of Round 7 in the Isuzu UTE A-League, with Western Sydney Wanderers captain Marcelo named for Sunday’s clash with Melbourne Victory despite an Achilles tendon injury suffered in Round 6.

Marcelo was withdrawn in the first half of the Wanderers’ 2-2 draw with Brisbane Roar on the road, but despite head coach Marko Rudan’s early fears of a serious injury, the central defender has been included in this week’s squad.

Speaking pre-game, Rudan revealed Marcelo had not trained yet this week, and whether he starts this weekend’s clash with Victory remains to be seen.

“Marcelo has had issues even last year with the Achilles,” Rudan said.

“He felt a lot of pain in there, got it scanned, the best possible scenario is what happened with it.

“He’s been off feet; he’s touch-and-go whether he starts this week, but certainly if he’s not right this week, he’s definitely playing the week after against Adelaide at home.

“No, not yet (training). We’re only on our second session back, I gave the boys a few days off after the Brisbane trip given the opportunity of a nine-day turnaround… Marcelo has (done) a full pre-season. He’s played almost every minute of every game as well, so there are no issues from a fitness perspective. But he’s keeping himself going and his heart rate up while doing other things in the gym.”
