Sydney FC teenage sensation Akol Akon has signed a one-year contract extension, committing his future to the Sky Blues until the end of the 2028-29 Isuzu UTE A-League season.
The new deal extends Akon’s stay by a further year after the 17-year-old had already been contracted until the conclusion of the 2027-28 campaign.
Akon enjoyed a breakthrough 2025-26 season, making 17 first-team appearances and establishing himself as one of the competition’s brightest young prospects. The contract extension follows the activation of a clause based on the number of senior appearances he made during the campaign.

The winger also produced one of the standout individual displays of the season when he registered three assists in Sydney FC’s 4-1 Sydney Derby victory over Western Sydney Wanderers at Allianz Stadium.
“I’m really happy to be staying at Sydney FC. I’ve loved my first season with the club and learned so much from the coaches and the senior players every day,” Akon said.
“To be able to secure my future here means a lot to me. I feel like this is the perfect place to keep improving as a player, and I’m excited to continue working hard and helping the team achieve success over the next few years.”
Akon etched his name into the club’s history books during the 2025-26 season, becoming Sydney FC’s youngest-ever men’s debutant at 16 years, two months and 21 days when he featured against Sydney United 58 in the Australia Cup in August.
He also became the youngest player to start an Isuzu UTE A-League Finals Series match and Grand Final, while the teenager has represented Australia’s Under-17 side on eight occasions and is set to play a key role at the FIFA U17 World Cup later this year.

Sydney FC head coach Patrick Kisnorbo said the teenager had earned his new deal through his performances and commitment.
“Akol has deserved this contract extension through the way he has applied himself every day and the performances he has produced,” Kisnorbo said.
“He has earned his game-time on merit and it shows we are building a culture where young players are rewarded if they perform.
“He’s only scratching the surface of what he’s capable of, and we’re looking forward to helping him continue his development over the coming seasons.”
The extension continues Sydney FC’s focus on retaining emerging talent ahead of the 2026-27 campaign, with Akon set to remain a key part of Kisnorbo’s squad after his breakout first season in Sky Blue.
