New era, familiar face: Adelaide United club legend named new assistant coach

Adelaide United have appointed fan favourite and club legend Isaías Sánchez as their new Isuzu UTE A-League assistant coach on a two-year deal.

Having recently announced his retirement at the end of the Isuzu UTE A-League 2024-25 season, the Spanish star is now back in the red of Adelaide to work alongside newly appointed head coach Airton Andrioli.

The 38-year-old played 289 matches across two stints with Adelaide – more than anyone else in club history – and brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the role as well as a winning pedigree having won the Premiership/Championship double with the Reds in 2015-16.

“Adelaide United has been such a big part of my life for more than a decade, and I feel incredibly lucky to keep playing a role in the Club’s journey,” said the Spaniard.

“It’s a privilege to step into this new chapter, and I’m excited to work alongside Airton and the coaching team as we continue building something special together.”

Adelaide’s all-time appearance holder and four-time winner of the Aurelio Vidmar Medal, Isaías already holds his UEFA B license as he now begins his first foray into coaching.

Following on from the club’s decision to appoint Andrioli after parting ways with former head coach Carl Veart, Isaías joins former Ninja A-League coach Adrian Stenta on the coaching staff after he recently left the club’s women’s side to take up a role as men’s assistant coach.

“Isaías embodies the spirit and values of Adelaide United,” said technical director, Ernest Faber.

“His transition from player to coach is a natural progression, and I am thrilled to appoint him to assist Airton and Adrian as we embark on this new chapter.

“His experience and insight will be instrumental in developing our squad and maintaining the club’s commitment to nurturing South Australian talent.”
