Melbourne City have signed Celtic winger Marco Tilio on loan for the remainder of the 2023-24 Isuzu UTE A-League season.
The 22-year-old left AAMI Park to join the Scottish champions last season for what was an Australian record transfer fee.
Tilio, who is currently away on Socceroos duty at the Asian Cup, will join up with his former teammates after the tournament as he bids to get more minutes under his belt ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
“I’m thrilled to be back at City. The memories and experiences from my time here are unforgettable, and I can’t wait to contribute to the team’s success once again,” Tilio said.
“The support from the fans has always been incredible, and I’m eager to create more memorable moments together this season.”
Tilio initially caught the eye of Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers having contributed 20 goals and 19 assists in 86 appearances, helping City win one championship as well as three premierships.
“We are delighted to welcome a player of Marco’s calibre back to Melbourne City,” said City boss Aurelio Vidmar.
“His technical ability, vision and ability to run at defenders will make him an asset to our team.
“We’re confident his return will provide a boost as we look to continue to climb the table across the back end of the season.”
Tilio is City’s second signing of the transfer window after the club earlier announced the arrival of 15-time Socceroos midfielder James Jeggo on a deal until the end of the 2025-26 season.
“We’re thrilled to have Marco back at City,” said Melbourne City FC Director of Football Michael Petrillo.
“His impact during his previous stay with us was significant, and we believe his technical skills, pace and work ethic will add another dimension to our attack.
“Marco’s return is a testament to the strong relationships we maintain, and we’re grateful to Celtic FC for facilitating this loan.”
