Drought broken! Brisbane Roar STUN Sydney FC to earn first win of the season

Check out the highlights from Sydney FC's thrilling clash with Brisbane Roar

Brisbane Roar have finally recorded their first victory of the Isuzu UTE A-League season after stunning Sydney FC to seal a dramatic 4-3 win at Allianz Stadium.

The league’s bottom side came out firing at Allianz Stadium and deservedly took the lead in the 31st minute when Ben Halloran cushioned a delicate lob over Sydney goalkeeper Harrison Devenish-Meares and into the empty net.

Ruben Zadkovich’s men then added a second soon after as Henry Hore scored his first Isuzu UTE A-League goal since returning from a loan spell in Korea, hitting a rasping effort beyond the keeper from inside the box.

A below-par Sydney FC responded to going two-down by pulling one back in the 31st minute as Joel King converted from close range after he was picked out inside the box by Joe Lolley.

However it was the away side who would be much the happier heading into the break as Adam Zimarino was on hand to finish off a crisp Brisbane move, tapping home Halloran’s ball across the face of goal to make it 3-1.

Despite Sydney FC desperately needing a goal it was Brisbane Roar who looked the more likely and they eventually bagged their fourth as young defender Lucas Herrington volleyed home his first Isuzu UTE A-League goal to make it 4-1.

Young Sydney FC talent Thiago Quintal drilled home his first league goal in the 84th minute to make things nervy for the away side heading into the final stages before Jordan Courtney-Perkins then headed home in the 87th minute to make it 4-3.

However Ruben Zadkovich’s side held on after seven minutes of added time to finally tasted victory for the first time this season.

A shock defeat for Sydney FC, the result means Ufuk Talay’s side miss out on the chance to move up into second on the ladder and could even end the round outside of the top six following their fifth defeat of the campaign.

They may have been winless in the league heading into this game but the Roar started brightly at Allianz Stadium and deservedly took the lead in the 16th minute through Halloran.

Racing onto a pass over the top of the Sydney backline, Halloran cooly lobbed the ball over Devenish-Meares with the goalkeeper caught in no man’s land, such was the quality of the pass in behind.

With the Sky Blues still stuttering, the away side then silenced Allianz Stadium once again, this time in the 21st minute as the returning Hore controlled O’Shea’s pass inside the box before lashing the ball beyond Devenish-Meares from close range.

Finally clicking into gear, the Sky Blues pulled one back in the 31st minute as a lofted ball to the back post from Joe Lolley found King and the fullback made no mistake when inside the six-yard box, slotting the ball beyond Macklin Freke to make it 2-1.

Almost immediately, Brisbane were back inside the box though and would have made it 3-1 were it not for a good save from Devenish-Meares who tipped a Hore header round the post however the away side would eventually find their third.

Zipping the ball around like it was a training ground move, Brisbane carved the Sky Blues apart as Keegan Jelacic slipped the ball through for Halloran who in turn squared it for Zimarino to slot into the back of the net making it 3-1 at half-time.

Needing to pile on the pressure, head coach Ufuk Talay rang the changes after the break bringing on Jordan Courtney-Perkins and Anas Ouahim in place of Adrian Segecic and goalscorer King.

Play was then stopped midway through the second half as Socceroo Anthony Caceres received treatment on a head injury, with the Socceroo unable to then continue and was ultimately replaced as a concussion substitute.

New signing Jaushua Sotirio came on for his Sydney FC debut in the 66th minute but Brisbane were in the ascendancy and almost made it 4-1 but Sam Klein’s effort crashed back off the near post and across the face of goal before O’Shea then fired the ball wide of the target.

The fourth goal would inevitably arrive though and it was a first Isuzu UTE A-League goal for defender Herrington.

Peeling away from his marker, the 17-year-old volleyed home an out-swinging corner before sprinting over to celebrate with his under-fire head coach.

Throwing everything forward, the Sky Blues pulled another back care of a sweet strike from substitute Quintal in the 84th minute.

Things got even more tense in the 87th minute when Courtney-Perkins headed the ball beyond Freke to make it 4-3 heading into time added on.

However Sydney FC couldn’t fashion another clear-cut chance as Brisbane Roar held on to secure their first league win of the season and their first in 288 days.
