Newcastle Jets have confirmed central defender Phillip Cancar will be staying at the club after putting to pen-to-paper on a new two-year contract.
The 23-year-old’s deal was set to expire at the end of the season, however a deal has now been struck to lock down the defender until the end of the 2025-26 season.

“I’m very happy to re-sign here for a further two seasons,” said Cancar after becoming the latest Jet to sign on for the upcoming Isuzu UTE A-League campaign.
“I’m loving my time in Newcastle and I feel that I’m improving every day under Rob (Stanton) and his coaching staff. They trusted and believed in me and I can’t wait to return to pre-season training.
“The club is heading in the right direction, we can all feel something special here and I’m happy to be a part of it.”
Initially joining the Jets at the beginning of 2023 after departing Scottish side Livingston, Cancar has gone on to establish himself as a key figure in the Newcastle defensive unit, making 22 appearances last season as Rob Stanton’s side finished the season in 10th position.

“Phil has found a home here in Newcastle and knows that this is the best place for him to continue developing as a player,” said Newcastle Jets head coach Rob Stanton.
He added: “Since I have arrived at the club he has improved and I look forward to watching his continued growth on and off the pitch.”
Cancar’s re-signing is the third of the current off-season following on from those of Noah James and Callum Timmins while the club also recently announced the signing of talented young winger Eli Adams from Melbourne Victory.
The Jets have also continued their push to reward local young talent with an opportunity at the club, handing academy products Ben van Dorssen and Alex Nunes scholarship deals until the end of the 2025-26 season.
