Brisbane Roar have pulled off a transfer coup, signing former Johnny Warren Medalist Marco Rojas on a deal until the end of the 2023-24 Isuzu UTE A-League season.

Rojas was a free agent after leaving Chilean club Colo-Colo and returns to the Isuzu UTE A-League where he made over 130 appearances during spells with Melbourne Victory and Wellington Phoenix.

“I chose this project because it was the one that resonated the most with how I was
feeling and what I was thinking at this point in my career,” Rojas said.

“Having spoken to the club and people within the club, Zac (Anderson) & Kaz (Patafta)and further along the line the new coaching staff, I began to understand that this was a place that really resonated with my values and was a place that was determined to be more than just a football club.

“I’d done a bit of searching myself and I think that I’ve found a really good place to start playing again and to work through those values.

“I’m aware of a lot of their players, aware of their history and I think I really connected with the desire for the project and to come back to some of those days if possible.”

Having already commenced training with his new club, Rojas is in line to feature for Brisbane when they take on league leaders Wellington Phoenix on Friday night at Suncorp Stadium.

An Australia Cup winner with Melbourne Victory in 2021, Rojas returns to the league following a two-season stint in South America playing for Chile’s most successful club.

“I am very excited to announce the signing of Marco Rojas, a player whose skill and dedication represents the excellence we strive for at our club,” said Brisbane Chairman and CEO Kaz Patafta.

“Marco’s arrival is a significant milestone in our journey towards rebuilding and strengthening our club.

“His experience and leadership are crucial and will undoubtedly help us achieve our
ambitious goals.”

A 43-time international for New Zealand, Rojas may also be hoping his Isuzu UTE A-League comeback coincides with a return to the national team having not featured for the All Whites since a 2-1 win over China in March 2023.
