Black Knights add championship-winning experience ahead of title defence

Auckland FC have strengthened their defence ahead of the 2026/27 Isuzu UTE A-League season, signing experienced defender Aaron Calver.

The 30-year-old returns to the Isuzu UTE A-League after four years overseas, bringing more than 90 appearances in the competition and a wealth of silverware to the reigning Premiers.

Calver made his professional debut with Sydney FC in 2012 and went on to win two Premierships and one Championship with the Sky Blues before later enjoying spells at Western United and Perth Glory.

The defender moved to South Korea in 2022, making almost 70 appearances across K League 1 and K League 2, including helping Gwangju FC win the K League 2 title in his first season at the club.

“Coming back to the A-League, especially with such an ambitious group, right off the back of a title, is an opportunity that I just couldn’t say no to,” Calver said.

“I’m here, I’m ready and excited to help Auckland defend their title.”

Auckland FC Director of Football Terry McFlynn believes Calver’s experience and winning mentality will strengthen the club’s defensive stocks.

“Aaron is a top player with a lot of experience, and he will serve as a much-needed reinforcement for our backline this season.

“He’s a trophy winner, and when you can bring someone into your squad with trophy-winning experience, especially A-League ones, it makes the signing even better for us.”

Calver becomes Auckland’s fourth signing of the off-season with former Newcastle Jets star and New Zealand international Lachlan Bayliss the first to join the Champions.
