Adelaide were the better team: Elrich

Adelaide United goalscorer Tarek Elrich bemoaned the Reds’ wastefulness for costing his side greater reward in Saturday night’s 2-1 defeat to Melbourne Victory.

The hosts attempted twice as many shots as their opponents in a frantic clash but ultimately slumped to a second straight defeat courtesy of Marco Rojas’ heartbreaking stoppage time strike.

“The better team definitely lost that one,” Elrich said on Fox Sports.

“We created all those chances, hit the post – sometimes football is unfair. You can’t really explain it.

“No disrespect to Melbourne but our boys gave it everything and we created a lot of chances. It’s probably one of the best games we’ve played all season.

“At the end of the day, if you don’t take your chances against a quality team like that, you’re going to get punished.”

Elrich produced one of the match’s most memorable moments when he curled a world-class finish into Lawrence Thomas’ top corner, only for Adelaide to lose grip of their hard-earned point.

“It doesn’t matter now that we lost,” the fullback said of his goal.

“If we had have won that game the boys probably would have been sick of me this week talking about it.

“That just gets cancelled out with pretty much the last kick of the game for them.”
