Adelaide United receive club-record fee as striker Fiona Worts departs

Adelaide United have confirmed striker Fiona Worts will depart the club for a record transfer fee after securing an overseas opportunity.

The 30-year-old striker will leave Australia on Friday with reports suggesting she is bound for South Korea.

Worts departs as one of the most significant players in club history, sitting equal top of Adelaide United’s all-time leading goalscorers list.

The English forward first joined Adelaide United in 2020 and, following her second spell with the club leaves having scored 32 goals in 73 appearances.

“I’m gutted to be leaving the team at this point in the season, and I’m sorry to anyone who feels let down,” said Worts, after news of her transfer was confirmed.

“But I know opportunities like this do not come around often and this felt like one I had to take.

“I have every confidence the girls will continue to do something special this season, and I will be their biggest fan as they do so.

She continued: “I’m so grateful for my time at United over the years. It’s been an incredible adventure and I have some of the most amazing memories that I’ll cherish forever.

“Above all, I’m most grateful for the people – my teammates, the staff, and of course the fans. They are what make this Club so special, and I will miss them greatly.”

Whilst it’s a blow for the club to lose a player of Worts’ calibre, Adelaide United Football Director, Mitch van Gellekom says her legacy is there for all to see.

“Fiona has made an outstanding contribution to Adelaide United and leaves as one of the most influential players in our A-League Women history,” said van Gellekom.

“To depart as a joint all-time leading goalscorer and for a club-record fee is a reflection of her quality and character.

“On behalf of everyone at Adelaide United, I’d like to thank Fiona for everything she has given to the Club and wish her every success overseas.”

Next up for Adelaide is a crucial clash with fellow Premiership hopefuls Canberra United at McKellar Park on Sunday.
