Adelaide defender excited by young brigade

Adelaide United defender Ersan Gulum expects the squad’s impressive crop of youngsters to continue improving after playing key roles in the Reds’ rise to fourth on the ladder.

Ryan Kitto scored both goals in Sunday’s 2-0 home win over Western Sydney Wanderers which gave Adelaide back-to-back Hyundai A-League victories for the first time under Marco Kurz.

Emerging winger Nikola Mileusnic was also lively again, while debutant defender Ryan Strain looked assured at both ends of the pitch.

“The younger boys are getting more confidence under their belts,” Gulum told Fox Sports.

“Ryan Kitto and Nikola are doing fantastic jobs and Strainy [gave] an incredible performance in his first game.

“We’re a new team. From last year to this year it’s a completely different squad.

“We’ve done really well and I think we’re only getting better each week.”

Gulum also took heart from the way the Reds responded to their midweek Westfield FFA Cup Final heartbreak.

“I think we did a great job against Sydney FC. Marco [Kurz] was proud of us,” the Turkey international said.

“We did really well in the Cup Final, unfortunately conceded a goal in extra-time, but full credit to the boys on coming out and winning tonight.”
