Adelaide defender challenges teammates to ditch fear

Adelaide United defender Ben Garuccio has launched an impassioned plea for the Reds to shed their fear following Saturday night’s 2-0 home defeat to Melbourne Victory.

The home side were kept scoreless in a third straight match for the first time in their history as Victory make it back-to-back wins at Coopers Stadium.

“My mindset when I’m out there is we’re bottom,” Garuccio told Fox Sports.

“We’re on seven points, how much worse can it get for us? What do we really have to be afraid of? Coming bottom? We’re already there, so the only way we can go is up.

“If that means taking a few more risks, we just have to be really confident and go for it.

“That’s the only way we’re going to win games and it’s possible in this league.”

Despite the contrast in fortunes between Adelaide and second-placed Victory, Garuccio believes the rivalry between the two teams remains as strong as ever.

“Especially for me, I fire up for these games,” the former Melbourne City man said.

“There’s nothing better than being at Coopers, obviously (Victory) bring their travelling crowd, and we would love nothing more than to get a win in front of our home fans.

“Unfortunately that wasn’t the case tonight.”
