Was this the best goalkeeping performance we’ve seen in the Hyundai A-League?
Eugene Galekovic wound back the clock with a goalkeeping masterclass in Melbourne City’s 2-0 win over Western Sydney Wanderers on Tuesday evening.
Galekovic, 37, pulled off a catalogue of sensational saves across the 90 minutes – particularly in the matches closing stages, as the hosts ramped up the pressure following the 56th minute dismissal of Rostyn Griffiths.
Headlining the former Adelaide United man’s highlight reel was an incredible stop to deny Alexander Baumjohann’s rocket from close range, a penalty save from Oriol Riera, and an acrobatic leap in the dying embers of the first half to parry Bruce Kamau’s curler.

Galekovic’s performance preserved a huge three points on the road and drew rapturous praise on social media, and from FOX SPORTS commentator Mark Bosnich.
“I think it’s one of the best I’ve ever seen since I’ve been back in the country,” said Bosnich.
“Out of all of the saves there were two that really stood out in my mind. The one from Kamau right before half time, which no one really noticed at the time – people just thought Kamau had put it wide. It’s always a sign of a great save when you do it like that.
“The one in the second half low down to his right was top drawer, that was a world class save. You have to be in the right spot at the right time. That is absolutely brilliant.
“There’s no better feeling. Those feelings come very rarely for goalkeepers during games.”
