Craig Goodwin is on the verge of equalling a club record as high-flying Adelaide United entertain Western Sydney Wanderers in the A-League Men on Wednesday.
Goodwin has been a class above for the Reds this season, the Australia international supplying another two assists in Adelaide’s 2-1 win over Newcastle Jets in the Isuzu UTE A-League on Sunday.
The Socceroo is on the cusp of history – he is one goal away from reaching 35 for the Reds in the ALM, which would match Bruce Djite for the most of any Adelaide player.
Goodwin, who has already scored six goals this season and has been directly involved in four goals in his last four appearances (one goal, three assists), will once again be at the forefront for a red-hot Adelaide team that could close within three points of the ALM summit.
Adelaide are riding a three-game winning streak to be third in the table and funnily enough, the Reds have won their past three matches by a 2-1 scoreline. In fact, each of their last five victories in the ALM have been by that scoreline.
The last time they won more successive games was a six-game stretch from February to March 2021.
As for Mark Rudan’s Wanderers, they’ll be desperate for a response after their 3-1 loss to local rivals Macarthur FC over the weekend.
The Wanderers fell to a third defeat in four matches in Campbelltown, leaving Western Sydney 10th in the table after their 15 fixtures and six points adrift of the top six.
Western Sydney, though, will be buoyed by their form in South Australia.
The Wanderers are undefeated in their last five ALM games against Adelaide on the road (W2, D3); their last defeat against them in Adelaide was a 2-0 loss in November 2017.
However, Western Sydney have won only one of their last 14 ALM games as the away team on the day (D4, L9) and have lost their last four away games on the bounce.
