The Ninja A-League is officially the No.1 women’s club competition in Asia

The Ninja A-League is officially the number one ranked women’s football competition in Asia, according to the latest numbers released by the Asian Football Confederation.

At the end of the 2024-25 campaign, the AFC Women’s Club Competition rankings have Australia sitting top on 96.662 points, a significant distance clear of South Korea (75.852), Japan (74.800), China (74.583) and Vietnam (70.393).

Melbourne City’s brilliant run to the final of the inaugural AFC Women’s Champions League is a big reason why.

The Ninja A-League Premiers were dominant in Asia this season, going through the group stage undefeated with a single goal conceded across three matches, before a 3-0 victory over Chinese Taipei’s Taichung Blue Whale in the quarter-finals.

They then found a way past South Korea’s Incheon Red Angels thanks to a stunning goal from 17-year-old Shelby McMahon, before falling agonisingly short of the Champions League crown on penalties to China’s Wuhan Jiangda.

The rankings are determined by points accrued at both a club and national team level.

Points at a club level are 70% of the total score, while national team points are worth 30%. Australia’s breakdown has 70.000 points delivered at a club level, while the Matildas have contributed 27.662 points.
