The Ninja A-League is officially the number one ranked women’s football competition in Asia, according to the latest numbers released by the Asian Football Confederation.
Melbourne City’s brilliant run to the final of the inaugural AFC Women’s Champions League is a big reason why.
The Ninja A-League Premiers were dominant in Asia this season, going through the group stage undefeated with a single goal conceded across three matches, before a 3-0 victory over Chinese Taipei’s Taichung Blue Whale in the quarter-finals.
They then found a way past South Korea’s Incheon Red Angels thanks to a stunning goal from 17-year-old Shelby McMahon, before falling agonisingly short of the Champions League crown on penalties to China’s Wuhan Jiangda.
The rankings are determined by points accrued at both a club and national team level.

Points at a club level are 70% of the total score, while national team points are worth 30%. Australia’s breakdown has 70.000 points delivered at a club level, while the Matildas have contributed 27.662 points.
