Western United dealt major blow before their first ever Grand Final

Western United star Angie Beard will miss the Liberty A-League Grand Final due to a foot injury sustained in the Semi Final triumph over Sydney FC.

Western’s Cinderella story continued last week when they upstaged three-time reigning premiers Sydney 1-0 to reach the April 30 decider, however, all eyes were on Beard and her fitness after she hobbled off the field at Allianz Stadium.

A three-time Australia international who captained Melbourne Victory to Liberty A-League glory in 2020-21, the 25-year-old went down under no contact and was substituted in the 78th minute.

She will now watch on as Western face either Sydney or defending champions Victory in the decider.

Beard receives treatment during the Semi Final against Sydney FC.

“While the team will miss Beard’s ability on the pitch in the Grand Final, her impact and influence on the group will remain as strong as ever as the team prepares for the historic occasion,” Western said in a statement.

“Everyone at Western United wishes Angie all the very best in her recovery and looks forward to seeing her back on the pitch in the Green and Black next season.”

In her first season with the Liberty A-League’s newest team, Beard made 12 appearances, 10 of those starts under Mark Torcaso.
