Wellington Phoenix vice-captain to miss the remainder of the Liberty A-League season

Wellington Phoenix have been dealt a blow after Rebecca Lake suffered a season-ending injury.

The Phoenix vice-captain and centre-back sustained an ankle sprain in the first half of Wellington’s 3-1 Liberty A-League win at Perth Glory last week.

Lake – promoted to vice-captain during the season – will be sidelined for six weeks, ruling her out for the remainder of the 2023-24 campaign.

STATE OF PLAY: Liberty A-League’s wild finals race with 3 rounds left – FIVE teams could win it!

Prior to the injury, she had only missed one of the Phoenix’s 18 matches in their quest to reach the finals.

The 24-year-old joined Wellington at the start of the season and became an integral part of the squad – establishing herself in the heart of the team’s defence following a season-ending injury to Marisa van der Meer in December.

Wellington are ninth in the standings and two points outside the top six with four matches to play.

The Phoenix host defending champions Sydney FC on Sunday.
