Marco Rojas’ Wellington Phoenix reunion cut short after release: Details

Wellington Phoenix have agreed to terminate Marco Rojas’ contract by mutual consent.

The Phoenix have released Rojas with three months still remaining on the 33-year-old’s Isuzu UTE A-League deal.

Rojas reunited with Wellington at the start of 2024-25 in a full-circle moment after 13 years, having burst onto the scene with the ‘Nix in 2009.

However, injuries curtailed the New Zealand international’s return to Wellington, where he was limited to just seven appearances, of which only two were starts.

Despite this, Rojas – an unused substitute against Western Sydney Wanderers last week – is still only second to Phoenix team-mate Hideki Ishige for assists this term.

“We’re all disappointed we didn’t get to see the best of Marco in a Phoenix shirt,” said director of football Shaun Gill.

“Injuries are an unfortunate part of football and they curtailed his involvement this season.

“Even though it’s been brief, it’s been great to see Marco back in Wellington where his football career began and we wish him all the best for the future.”
