Brisbane Roar have signed former Portugal youth international Asumah Abubakar for the remainder of the 2024-25 Isuzu UTE A-League season.
Abubakar arrives from Switzerland’s most successful club Grasshoppers, where he was teammates with Subway Socceroos attacker and A-Leagues graduate Awer Mabil, while Nestory Irankunda is currently on loan at the Swiss club from Bayern Munich.

Of Ghanaian descent, Abubakar – who started his career at Willem II in the Netherlands – represented Portugal at the 2016 Under-19 UEFA European Championship, playing alongside current Manchester City star Ruben Dias and Manchester United full-back Diogo Dalot. He scored against Germany at the tournament.
“We are delighted to welcome Asumah to our football club,” said Roar COO Zac Anderson.
“Asumah is a player with incredible talent, a strong work ethic, and experience at a high level of competition.
“His speed, technical ability, and attacking mindset is an invaluable addition.”
Abubakar’s arrival is Brisbane’s third signing of the January transfer window, after Nathan Amanatidis and Austin Ludwik, while Henry Hore returned from a loan stint.
He will look to fill the void left by young gun Thomas Waddingham’s move to EFL Championship side Portsmouth.
