Adelaide United goalkeeper James Delianov pulled off the Save of Matchweek 21 when denying Melbourne City defender Curtis Good a goal from a well-placed header on Thursday, May 13.
The Reds played three games in Matchweek 21, and despite making a crucial penalty save in his team’s 1-0 win over Brisbane on Sunday Delianov was awarded for his block in a 4-1 loss against City.
Former English Premier League goalkeeper Mark Bosnich selected Delianov’s block from a range of impressive saves across the nine-game Matchweek, citing the difficulty in backtracking to tip Good’s header diverted from the front post toward the top-left corner from a corner routine when deciding to award Save of the Weeek to the Reds custodian.
“He made some super saves all week,” Bosnich said.
“I can remember that penalty save against Brisbane as well – but (of) the two saves against Melbourne City I will go for the header by Curtis Good that he flicked over.
“The reason I’m going for the header is because he had to adjust, and sometimes adjusting and then diving from a standing start is much harder than when you’ve got momentum when you’re coming forward to close down the shot.”
