Central Coast Mariners goalkeeper Mark Birighitti has been awarded A-League Save of Matchweek 2, capping off what has been a promising start to the 2020/21 A-League campaign in Gosford after his side’s two wins and two clean sheets from as many games.
Birighitti earned his nod for the accolade in Matchweek 2 for his quick thinking to deny Macarthur FC defender Ivan Franjic an equaliser on Sunday afternoon.
With just 15 minutes to play and the game in the balance, Birighitti adjusted to a deflection off Franjic’s shot from outside the box to get back across to his left and push the ball away from goal.
His quick thinking and fast reflexes kept his side ahead, allowing his teammates to press on for a sealing goal which came in the 89th minute to hand the Mariners a second win from two games and keep them on top of the A-League table.
