Brisbane Roar goalkeeper Jamie Young earned Save of Matchweek 17 honours for a quick-thinking stop to keep Western Sydney Wanderers defender Dylan McGowan off the scoresheet.
Brisbane won 2-1 at Bankwest Stadium in the first fixture of Matchweek 17, moving to within two points of the Wanderers in sixth place on the A-League table with three games in hand on Carl Robinson’s side.
It was an important win in the context of Brisbane’s season helped by the stunning glove-work of Young, who made the A-League Team of the Week for Matchweek 17 as well as claiming Save of the Week.
After taking a 2-1 lead, the Roar held onto that slender advantage to the full-time whistle. But in the 71st minute of play everything could have changed, if not for the quick reflexes of Brisbane’s custodian.
The Wanderers received a chance to swing the ball in from a corner and the routine saw the ball played short to James Troisi, who swung his cross into the box. The ball travelled through a number of defensive bodies before finding McGowan, who turned his man to fire a shot from the edge of the six-yard box toward Young in goal.
The ball came towards the Brisbane ‘keeper who was blinded by his defensive teammate Macaulay Gillesphey defending McGowan, but as the shot flew toward the back of the net Young got a strong left glove up to meet it, falling to the deck as he prevented the ball from crossing the line.
