A-League plays catch-up after COVID havoc

The A-League will kick off a month-long football frenzy this weekend as the race begins to make up for time lost to COVID-19.

Around 60 A-League Men and A-League Women matches will be played in February as games that were postponed are now added back into the schedule.

The packed fixture means teams will be given little rest between games, likely resulting in mass changes each match.

There will be daily action right through to the end of February.

An incomplete fixture of 12 men’s and nine women’s games up until February 6 was released on Friday, with further matches to be added throughout the month.

Brisbane will host a double header this Saturday, with the women’s team taking on Melbourne City before the men do battle with Western Sydney.

With most A-League teams having been ravaged by COVID-19 since late last year, organisers are hopeful there will be less games postponed over the coming months.

“This is the second season we have been impacted by pandemic conditions and we have operated consistently with the safety of our players, clubs and fans at the core,” A-Leagues commissioner of football Greg O’Rourke said.

“We have implemented effective processes and protocols across the clubs and postponement decisions were not taken lightly.”
