‘Quality and experience’ added to Macarthur squad as Bulls sign former Phoenix midfield technician

Macarthur FC have secured the services of former Wellington Pheonix midfielder Clayton Lewis for the next two Isuzu UTE A-League seasons.

The 26-year-old New Zealand international puts pen to paper on a deal to join the Bulls in the aftermath of Wellington’s Elimination Final loss to Adelaide United in week one of the 2022-23 Finals Series.

Lewis spent three seasons under Ufuk Talay at the ‘Nix, making 63 league appearances in yellow and black.

Prior to earning his first A-League Men contract in Wellington, Lewis plied his trade for Auckland City in the ISPS Handa Men’s Premiership, which followed a two-season stint at Scunthorpe United in England’s League Two.

Lewis has scored three goals across his 63 A-League Men appearances for Wellington, proving himself as one of the league’s most gifted set-piece takers since his arrival on the scene in late-2020.

Macarthur head coach Mile Sterjovski says he’s excited to get to work with the experienced All Whites midfielder across the next two A-League Men seasons.

“Clayton is an international who brings in quality and experience,” Sterjovski said. “He has good passing range and can give us great deliveries with set pieces.

“With a good preseason ahead, I can see him being a valuable member of the squad.”
