Ben Halloran’s nonchalant back-heeled volley scored against Macarthur FC was adjudged Goal of Matchweek 16 Alex Brosque.
The Sydney FC legend chose the Adelaide United winger’s goal for both the audacity of the finish and the confidence of the assist, which Joshua Cavallo fired into the box from the left flank on the volley.
Halloran – perhaps thinking he was offside – attacked the ball casually, flicking it past Adam Federici into the back of the net. But a VAR check found Mark Milligan keeping him onside, as Halloran wrapped up all three points for the Reds in an impressive 3-1 victory.
“My goal of the week this week goes to Ben Halloran,” Brosque said.
“I think if we’re happy to overlook firstly the Al Hassan Toure air-swing in the lead-up to the goal, then the goal itself was actually quite brilliant, in two parts for me: firstly the build-up, in the cross by young Josh Cavallo.
“Most players in that situation would have taken a touch before whipping it back in, but I love the confidence that he showed and had in his own ability to whip that in first time. The technique to do that is a lot harder than he made it look, so I think that for starters was actually quite special.
“The finish by Ben Halloran was equally brilliant. To have the awareness and cheekiness to back-heel it in, for me a great finish and a great team goal by Adelaide.”
