Jamie Maclaren’s stoppage-time strike in Melbourne City’s emphatic 4-1 win over Western Sydney Wanderers has been named A-League Goal of Matchweek 14 by Socceroos great John Aloisi.
Maclaren’s lethal finish in the 92nd minute put the seal on City’s club record-equalling sixth straight competition win and recorded his 12th goal in 12 A-League matches this season, making it six straight goalscoring games in a row.
The Golden Boot leader slammed in a left-footed half volley from 14 yards to give keeper Daniel Margush no chance of stopping the ball rising into the roof of the Wanderers net, and Aloisi heaped praise on Maclaren’s poise and execution.
“Such a difficult technique, the ball on the half volley like he did,” Aloisi said.
“But what he did about it, was Jamie was already on the move when the cross came in, anticipating where he believed the ball would drop when it came out.
“As the ball does come out, he shifts his feet to adjust to the flow of the ball, plants his right foot, gets his right arm in the air and plants his right foot to give him that balance.
“Head over the ball so that when he does plant that right foot, he doesn’t strike it into the top tier of the stands. Locks his left ankle down, strikes through the ball, comes all the way through and he could not have hit it any sweeter than he did.”
“What a brilliant goal from an amazing striker.”
