Brisbane Roar head coach signs new deal after record-breaking debut season

Brisbane Roar head coach Alex Smith has re-sign with the Ninja A-League side.

Smith has signed on for the 2025-26 campaign following a record-breaking first full season in Brisbane.

While the Roar missed out on the Finals Series, they scored a club-record 46 goals in 2024-25 – surpassing the previous record of 29, while their 8-2 rout of Western United was the club’s biggest ever win in the competition.

Players also flourished under Smith. CommBank Matildas star Tameka Yallop enjoyed her most prolific season with 12 goals.

Meanwhile, sisters Sharn and Laini Freier earned Matildas call-ups, and a host of young talent—including Grace Kuilamu, Zara Kruger, Alicia Woods, Isabela Hoyos, and Ruby Cuthbert—received national youth team selections.

“I am extremely honoured to extend my contract at the Brisbane Roar,” Smith said. “I look forward to continuing the work I started here 18 months ago.

“My goal has always been to get this program back where it should be. The progress we have made has only strengthened my belief we will get there.

“Our fans responded last year, and I aim to reward them for all their support.”

Brisbane also enjoyed terrific home support last season as they led the league in average home attendance and set a new benchmark for a standalone Ninja A-League Women’s fixture, with 3,712 fans at Perry Park for the Round 12 clash against Adelaide United.

Brisbane Roar COO, Zac Anderson added: “The record attendances at Perry Park during the 2024-25 season were a direct result of the attractive and entertaining football played by our women’s team.

“We made significant progress across many areas compared to the previous season, and it’s crucial that we build upon this momentum heading into 2025-26.

“Roar must be playing finals football again — and we believe we’re creating the right environment and team to compete at that level.”
