Adelaide United have sold centre-back Alexandar Popovic to South Korean top-flight side Gwangju FC.
The talented 21-year-old defender joins the K League 1 outfit after six years with boyhood club Adelaide.
Popovic is the latest player off Adelaide’s famed production line to earn a move abroad, following the likes of Nestory Irankunda (Bayern Munich) and Steven Hall (Brighton) in recent times.

“We wish to thank Alexandar for his contribution to the Club, as he has been a massive figure both on and off the pitch,” said Adelaide head coach Carl Veart.
“Alexandar’s departure is a testament to the talent we nurture at Adelaide United, and we are proud to have played a role in his development as he takes on an international challenge.
“We wish Alexandar all the best and our door will always be open should he wish to return to Australia.”
After making his A-Leagues debut in 2022, Popovic has made 40 league appearances, scoring two goals.
In 2023-24, he has scored once in 12 Isuzu UTE A-League matches for the Reds.
“I am grateful for the opportunities and support I’ve received while at Adelaide United,” said Popovic.
“The decision to move to the K League 1 wasn’t easy, but I believe it’s the right step for my growth as a player.
“I’ve loved my time at the club and will cherish all the memories I’ve created with the amazing fans and my teammates.
“United gave me an opportunity to play football professionally and without this, I would not have development into the player and person I am today.”
