Newcastle Jets have received a huge boost on the eve of their A-League season opener with the addition of experienced midfielder Ali Abbas.
The 34-year-old, who has previously played for the Jets, has signed a one-year deal with the Hunter club.
Abbas brings a wealth of experience to the Jets squad, having made 138 A-League appearances over an 11-year period, also featuring for Sydney FC and Wellington Phoenix.
The former Iraqi International was excited to be continuing his football journey at the club where his A-League career started.
“I’m very happy and excited to be back in Newy,” Abbas told the Jets website.
“It’s been a long road for me and I’ve been waiting for my opportunity and I’m just extremely happy to be here with the boys. I’d really like to thank Deansy, the coaches and the club for this opportunity and taking a chance on me, I really, really appreciate it.”
“I just can’t wait for tomorrow to be able to represent the Newcastle Jets.”

“We are happy to have Ali back. He’s obviously very versatile, he can play in two or three different positions. He’s a good person, a hard worker and he fits in with the group very well,” Deans said.
“Ali has been here before, he knows the club, the town and that’s important as well.”
“I look forward to seeing him get on the pitch tomorrow in Jets colours.”
