A hat-trick from Norwegian Elise Thorsnes has breathed life into Canberra United’s top four hopes following a crushing 6-1 win over Adelaide United on Sunday.
On a hot day that saw drinks breaks, a frenetic beginning saw Westfield Matilda Ellie Carpenter – the December nomination for the NAB Young Footballer of the Year – open the scoring for Canberra inside the opening five minutes.
The Lady Reds equalised through the excellent Alyssa Mautz. But after that, it was a ruthless Green Machine that took control of the contest in hot conditions at McKellar Park in the capital.
Norwegian Thorsnes was clinical, adding her second shortly before the break and Matildas striker Ash Sykes added a third.
The pair was in irresistible form, combining brilliantly for Heather Garriock’s side.
And within 10 sizzling minutes after the restart, it went from 3-1 to 6-1.
Karly Roestbakken getting on the scoresheet in-between two more from Thorsnes.
Even Canberra’s last line of defence was in form with the classy Haley Kopmeyer shutting out Alex Chidiac with a super stop in the final 20 minutes.
The big win will give Canberra, in the sixth spot going into this round, a huge boost as they aim for a top-four finals finish.
