If one heated rivalry wasn’t enough this weekend, the round kicks-off with one of the Hyundai A-League’s oldest grudge matches between Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United.
Victory have dominated this fixture in recent seasons, losing only one of the last 13 meetings, but there is never any excuse for failure in this one and Reds fans will demand a competitive effort.
And with only one point separating them on the ladder, the significance of Friday night’s result could reverberate throughout the season.
ARE ROAR ON THE RISE?
Brisbane Roar secured their finest result of the campaign in last weekend’s 2-0 win at Western Sydney Wanderers and they have the perfect chance to make it two-in-two against an out-of-form Phoenix on Saturday.
Wellington’s confidence took a blow when they coughed up a two-goal advantage to lose 3-2 at home to Melbourne Victory, but they can take encouragement from the two victories they’ve managed in their last four trips to Queensland.
Another upset – this time at Cbus Super Stadium – would move them back within a point of John Aloisi’s men, who will hope to take advantage of a slick surface on the Gold Coast to prove their sluggish start is well and truly behind them.
FRESH FIREPOWER
Perth Glory and Newcastle Jets are both set to unleash a host of fit-again stars for what is sure to be an entertaining encounter at nib Stadium on Sunday.
Free-scoring forward Roy O’Donovan and experienced midfielder Wayne Brown will both travel with the Jets as the Hyundai A-League’s top-scorers aim to prey on the competition’s second-leakiest defence.
That will be easier said than done, as Glory appear ready to welcome back centre-forward Andy Keogh.
And with the likes of Diego Castro and Adam Taggart also a chance to return, the scene is set for a shootout in the west.
MARINERS TEST THEIR METTLE
Central Coast have back-to-back victories and fourth spot after a third of the campaign. But how far can they go?
That question may be partially answered by their trip south to take on a Melbourne City side stung by the midweek announcement of Tim Cahill’s departure.
Win away at AAMI Park and the Mariners might start to be considered the real deal.
