There’s some cracking match-ups for Round 2 of the Hyundai A-League 2017/18 Season with a few big-name stars returning for their respective clubs.
We’ve come up with five key inclusions that could have a big impact on their side’s chances of picking up three points this weekend.
Tim Cahill (Melbourne City)
After helping keep the Caltex Socceroos FIFA World Cup hopes alive, Cahill is back for his first appearance of the new Hyundai A-League campaign.
And what a match it is for Australia’s greatest-ever scorer to come back for in Saturday night’s blockbuster Melbourne Derby at Etihad Stadium.
It was the corresponding fixture last season where Cahill produced one of the goals of the season and expect the 37-year-old to try and make a similar impact against his side’s bitter rivals.
James Troisi (Melbourne Victory)
The Big V also welcome back their Caltex Socceroos contingent, including crafty playmaker Troisi.
While Victory pushed champions Sydney FC hard in the opening round, they missed the creativity and goal threat of the former Juventus man.
With Troisi back in the number 10 role, Dutchman Leroy George should revert to his preferred left-wing role giving Victory a potent-looking attack.
Brett Holman (Brisbane Roar)
Brisbane boss John Aloisi will be delighted to see his experienced playmaker Holman back for Friday night’s home clash with Adelaide United.
Roar struggled to get any service to Italian striker Massimo Maccarone in the defeat to City last weekend but Holman’s presence should solve that issue.
Excellent at picking out a pass in tight areas as well as the ability to shoot from distance, Holman might just be the spark Roar need to get off the mark this season.
Gui Finkler (Wellington Phoenix)
With Wellington facing the tough task of an away clash against Sydney FC on Sunday, the return of the classy Brazilian is perfect timing for coach Darije Kalezic.
Not only does Finkler have the creative flair to bolster Phoenix’s attack, he is a proven winner and often saves his best for the Sky Blues.
Watch for him to have a big game and cause Sydney’s water-tight defence a few problems.
Josh Risdon (Western Sydney Wanderers)
Given the Wanderers superb performance in round 1, it’s hard to see any player coming in and making them stronger but Risdon certainly should.
Risdon was superb for the Caltex Socceroos in the away leg against Syria and gives the Wanderers more thrust from his position at right-back.
Looks the fittest he has ever been through his career and with another FIFA World Cup qualifier just four weeks away, he’ll want to maintain his top form to remain in Ange Postecoglou’s squad.
