Inspired by Polish international Adrian Mierzejewski, Sydney FC thumped Western Sydney Wanderers 5-0 in the Sydney Derby on Saturday night.
The leaders without Serbian playmaker Milos Ninkovic, were simply too hard-working, organised and incisive.
At ANZ Stadium, Sydney FC racked up their biggest win in Sydney Derby history.
And had it not been for Vedran Janjetovic in the Wanderers goal, it could’ve been even more on a night that cruelly reminded Wanderers fans that #SydneyIsSkyBlue.
STORY OF THE GAME
- Sydney FC were immediately on the front foot, Polish international Adrian Mierzejewski with a stinging long-range drive parried away by Wanderers keeper Vedran Janjetovic inside five minutes. It was a sign of things to come…
- OPENING GOAL: the classy Pole was on target in the 14th minute for Sydney FC.
- The opening 20 minutes was all Sydney FC, with Jordy Buijs and Alex Wilkinson having good chances to increase the lead while Janjetovic readjusted superbly to Cornthwaite’s
- CROSSBAR HIT: Wanderers’ Alvaro Cejudo with a curling right foot strike from the edge of the box tipped onto the bar by Redmayne on 29 minutes.
- It was end to end with Sydney hitting back with two good chances going begging to first Carney then Brosque. And sure enough, Brosquey was on target
- BROSQUE MAKES IT 0-2: Brosque with the classy finish as Wanderers were opened up with ease.
- BOBO MISSES SITTER Incredibly the Brazilian with the goal in front of him blasted over. It hardly mattered though…
- THIRD TO SYDNEY FC: Mierzejewski made amends for that miss with an exquisite set piece from just outside the box to extend the Sky Blues’ lead.
- HALF TIME: 0-3: The difference between these sides fully on show as the Sky Blues almost completely dominate
- SUPER SAVE: Bobo and Brosque combined beautifully yet in the one-on-one Janjetovic kept Brosque out. But not for long.
- 0-4: From the resulting corner, Lachlan Scott guided the ball into his own net and it was 4-0.
- VAR RUBS OUT FIFTH TO SYDNEY: Adrian Mierzejewski was adjudged to have handballed in the lead up to Michael Zullo’s smashing shot and it was rubbed off.
- Again the Wanderers were exposed, Janjetovic making a classy double-save to keep out the rampant Sky Blues after 62 minutes.
- 0-5: O’Neill with a classy curling effort had the Sydney FC fans on their feet after 76 minutes.
- Wanderers’ sub Brendon Santalab hit the post with a swerving low shot after 83 minutes. A reminder of what “Santa” can bring to this Wanderers side.
- It could’ve been six but Aspro with the recovery tackle on Bobo. Small mercies on a terrible night for the red and black.
