16 Westfield W-League players in Westfield Matildas squad for Chile friendlies

With the Tokyo 2020 qualifiers fast-approaching, Ante Milicic has called upon 16 Westfield W-League players in his squad for the Westfield Matildas international friendlies against Chile next month.

The Westfield Matildas will play two matches against the South Americans in Sydney (Saturday, November 9) and Adelaide (Tuesday, November 12).

Milicic named a 21-player squad on Tuesday, which includes 18 players that went to this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup in France.

There was also three fresh faces included in the squad in Jenna McCormick, Emma Checker and goalkeeper Sarah Willacy.

That trio are part of 16 players who are part of Westfield W-League clubs for the 2019/20 Season.

New Melbourne City signings Ellie Carpenter, Checker and Emily van Egmond are also there, while Sydney FC also have three players in Caitlin Foord, Alanna Kennedy and Chloe Logarzo.

Four other clubs have one player each in the Westfield Matildas squad, including Western Sydney Wanderers’ Amy Harrison, Melbourne Victory’s McCormick, Karly Roestbakken of Canberra United and Adelaide’s Willacy.

“We held a great training camp in Sydney earlier this month however for footballers nothing beats playing matches,” Milicic said.

“The players are all excited by the opportunity to come back to Australia to play on home soil for the first time since the Cup of Nations in March.

“These two games against Chile will be our only fixtures prior to February’s first phase of qualifying for Tokyo 2020, so we will be treating them with the utmost concentration and professionalism as we aim to make great use of our time together.

“We’re expecting strong home support in both Parramatta and Adelaide, and my expectation is that our team will reward every fan that comes to Bankwest and Coopers Stadium, or who watches from home, with an impressive performance.”
