Grand Finalists aplenty as PFA announces Liberty A-League Women Team of the Season

Professional Football Australia’s (PFA) A-League Women Team of the Season has been announced, with six Sydney FC players named in the squad, to go with two Western United representatives.

Three-time reigning premiers Sydney FC are the team most represented in the player-voted squad, including Matildas winger Cortnee Vine, midfielders Sarah Hunter and Mackenzie Hawkesby, defenders Charlotte McLean and Natalie Tobin while goalkeeper Jada Whyman was named on the bench.

Vine, in fact, was named captain of the season after receiving the most votes for a second year in a row.

All six players – including Vine – are set to be in action in this weekend’s Liberty A-League Grand Final, when they take on Western United at CommBank Stadium on Sunday.

“It’s been a fantastic year for me personally, and I’m really honoured to earn the vote
of my teammates and peers across the A-League,” Vine said.

“Winning awards that have been voted by players are the ultimate compliment and I
really cherish and respect these awards.

“I want to thank the girls and my peers for voting and to Sydney FC – I wouldn’t be
where I am without them. I look forward to hopefully adding another piece of silverware this Sunday.”

Their opponents on Sunday, Western, have two representatives in Golden Boot winner Hannah Keane and goalkeeper Hillary Beall – who nudged both Whyman and Melbourne Victory keeper Casey Dumont for the starting keeper spot.

Canberra United forward Michelle Heyman rounds out the forward line alongside Keane and Vine after scoring 12 goals this season – one shy of Western’s Golden Boot winner.

In defence, Tobin and McLean are joined by Western Sydney Wanderers and newly capped Matildas centre-back Clare Hunt along with Melbourne City full-back Kaitlyn Torpey.

While in midfield, Alex Chidac was voted in, despite her loan deal with Victory ending in February. The Matildas dynamo was incredible during her stay, scoring six goals and tallying five assists

Joining Whyman on the bench is Melbourne Victory defender Kayla Morrison, City attacker Rhianna Pollicina, Canberra United gun Vesna Milivojevic and Katrina Gorry – who stood out enormously at Brisbane Roar.
