Western United have signed Young Socceroos defender Kane Vidmar on a scholarship contract until the end of the 2024-25 Isuzu UTE A-League season.
Vidmar, following in his father Tony and uncle Aurelio’s footsteps, has already exhibited the exceptional talent that runs through their bloodline and his undeniable potential to be a future star of Australian football.
The teenage defender has represented Adelaide United’s youth team in NPLM South Australia, and received an international call-up to the Young Socceroos squad in 2022 during the first phase of ASC U20 Asian Cup qualification in Uzbekistan.
Upon signing a two-year scholarship deal with the 2021-22 A-League Men Champions, Vidmar admitted it was a “pinch me” moment to work under Western boss John Aloisi – a Socceroos icon.
“I’m so grateful and stoked to be joining Western United,” Vidmar said. “I’ve watched them since they started in the A-League and have always rated the way they go about things.
“I’ve obviously grown up with and admired the stories from the World Cup, so it’s a bit of a pinch-me moment to now have John (Aloisi) as my Head Coach.
“I just can’t wait to get started.”
Western general manager of football Mal Impiombato said 19-year-old Vidmar’s arrival represents the clubs commitment to developing young Australian talent.
“The club has been monitoring Kane through his performances in the NPL and we believe he has the capabilities to develop as a professional footballer under the guidance of our elite coaching team.
“This signing represents our commitment to developing and fostering Australian talent, and we welcome Kane to the club and look forward to his bright future.”
