Liberty A-League and CommBank Matildas stars Elise Kellond-Knight, Chloe Logarzo and Emily Gielnik and future Matilda Taren King were at Allianz Stadium in Sydney to announce the countdown to the Liberty A-League Women season which kicks off on Saturday October 14.
The opening round will be a standalone celebration of women’s football as the A-Leagues aim to break domestic attendances on the back of the history making FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The A-League Women will start before the A-League Men for the first time ever, and Central Coast Mariners will launch their brand new women’s team. This Liberty A-League season will also be the longest season in history, with a 22-game regular season, in line with global benchmarks.

Nick Garcia, Commissioner of the A-Leagues said: “Australia and New Zealand have shown that we are football nations over the last month, and we want to carry this incredible momentum into the Liberty A-League Women. Every single Matilda was made in the Liberty A-League Women and the only place to watch our national team stars and the next generation is here in the Liberty A-League.
“We designed this year’s schedule with a standalone weekend for the Liberty A-League before the men’s league begins and we want to see more fans in bigger venues cheering on our stars.
“This is the longest ever season, with three new teams added in three seasons, including the Central Coast Mariners Women who join us this year.

Logarzo recently returned to the Liberty A-League Women with Western United, signing on a permanent deal in March after a short loan stint at the beginning of last season.
The 49-time Matilda added: “There’s no ceiling (for the game). If we’re going to do it, it’s going to be right now.
“You can see there were 75,700 people in one stadium and then millions on top of that who are watching these games throughout this FIFA Women’s World Cup, and for me personally, if we can do this and turn up for the Matildas, why can’t we do it for the A-League? because every single Matilda that was out on that field was a product of this league.

“So if we want to continue the growth of this game and we want to make the Matildas the best they can possibly be, we want to have the investment into this A-League because the younger generation, they’re the ones who are going to be the next Matildas and the product of us is going to be through this A-League season and seasons to come.”
The Liberty A-League Pass launched last week, offering a free season pass to under 16 year olds, and is already on track to surpass last season’s full season registration total.
The Liberty A-League Women is home to a host of international stars, including current and future Matildas and NZ internationals and World Cup players like Rebekah Stott and Hannah Wilkinson, and Philippines star Angie Beard.
