Melbourne City have been dealt a major blow to their Liberty A-League championship aspirations after star Holly McNamara was ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a serious knee injury.
City’s worst fears were confirmed on Tuesday, with scans revealing a torn ACL for the Matildas attacker.
A-League Women challengers City were sweating on McNamara’s fitness after the 19-year-old was left visibly emotional as she was assisted off the field in Sunday’s 2-1 win over league-leading Sydney FC.
McNamara went down in an innocuous incident in the second half at AAMI Park, where City captain Emma Checker and team-mate Rhianna Pollicina helped her leave the pitch.
“Everyone at the Club is shattered to hear the news and will do everything it can to support Holly and look forward to seeing her return to the pitch next season,” City said in a statement.
“We wish her all the best in her recovery.”
It’s a huge blow for City, who are second in the standings but only two points adrift of Sydney with a game in hand.
McNamara has flourished this season, scoring four goals and supplying three assists in her maiden ALW campaign.
