Jada Whyman entered the history books as high-flying Sydney FC preserved their unbeaten start to the season after outclassing Liberty A-League contenders Melbourne City 3-0.
All eyes were on Sydney goalkeeper Whyman, who was looking to tie Lydia Williams’ record for most consecutive clean sheets in the A-League Women.
Whyman stepped up to the plate on Saturday as the 22-year-old equalled the long-standing record held by her idol after league-leading Sydney dispatched second-placed City in a top-of-the-table clash at Jubilee Stadium.
“It means the world to me,” Whyman told Paramount+ post-game.
“The girls have defended through all the games this season. The clean sheet usually goes to the keeper but I have to say, with the amount of defence these girls do, it makes my job easier so it’s seven clean sheets for Sydney FC.”
Whyman produced a couple of high-quality saves to keep an uncharacteristically sub-par City side at bay.
Not since December 4 have Whyman and Sydney conceded in the league, with the Sky Blues now seven points clear atop the table through eight matches.
Sydney, who have scored 26 goals while conceding just once, have the Premiership firmly in sight.
“We are just going to keep moving forward on how we’ve played,” Whyman added.
“I think any team provides a good challenge and I’m looking forward to the rest of the games this season.”
