A cautious Mark Milligan chose his words very carefully following Newcastle Jets’ loss to Wellington Phoenix on Saturday afternoon, in a match that featured some notable calls.
There was controversy surrounding Wellington’s opening goal, scored by Corbin Piper, after an on-field call of offside was overruled by VAR. Though the final call was ultimately correct, Newcastle’s confusion arose due to assistant Liam Smith raising his flag while play was still live – while referee Eric Saba allowed play to continue.

Asked if there was still grey area around some of the decisions being made by the VAR this season, Milligan’s response was brief but clear:
“There is… VAR has been around long enough now, that we have an understanding that a flag doesn’t go up until the action is dead.”
