Sydney FC swooped late on transfer Deadline Day, signing Portsmouth defender Jacob Farrell on a season-long loan ahead of the upcoming 2026/27 Isuzu UTE A-League campaign.
The 23-year-old defender joins the Sky Blues with an option to make the move permanent at the end of the 2026/27 campaign.
Farrell arrives with two Isuzu UTE A-League Championships under his belt having been a key member during what was an incredible period of success for the Central Coast Mariners.
Winning the Championship in season 2022/23, Farrell and co then won an unprecedented treble the following season as they won the Premiership, Championship and AFC Cup under English coach Mark Jackson during the 2023/24 campaign.

His performances during the 2023/24 campaign also earned Farrell selection in the PFA A-League Team of the Season before he then sealed a lucrative move to the EFL Championship with English side Portsmouth FC for a reported $800,000.
Tipped for big things in the UK, Farrell’s time in the UK was hampered by injuries but the move back to Australia now represents a good chance for the young defender to regain form and fitness.
“I’m delighted to be joining Sydney FC,” Farrell said after his loan move to Sydney FC was confirmed.
“It’s the biggest club in the A-League and a club that expects to be challenging for trophies every season, so that was a huge attraction for me.
He continued: “I know what it takes to be successful in this league and I want to bring that experience here and help Sydney FC have another successful season.

“The Sydney Derby is obviously a massive way to start the season and having experienced it from the other side last year, I know exactly what sort of atmosphere to expect.
“It would be pretty special to pull on the Sky Blue shirt for the first time in a game like that.
“I’ve had a really valuable couple of years with Portsmouth and learned a lot from being in a Championship environment.”
Capable of playing as a left-back or left-sided central defender, Farrell adds depth and versatility to a Sydney FC defence that already contains the likes of Jordan Courtney-Perkins, Alexandar Popovic, Rhyan Grant, James Overy and Ben Garuccio.
He could also make his Sydney FC debut in next month’s season-opening Sydney Derby against Western Sydney, having spent seven games on loan at the Wanderers last season.
“Jacob is a player who already knows what it takes to win in the A-League and he has spent the majority of the past two seasons in a very strong Championship environment with Portsmouth,” Sydney FC Head Coach Patrick Kisnorbo said.

“At 23 he is at a really good age. He has already achieved a lot, but he still has plenty of development ahead of him and we believe he can perform at a very high level for us this season.
“He gives us versatility on the left side of defence, can play at full back or centre back and brings good physical qualities, competitiveness and experience of winning.”
Farrell progressed through the Central Coast Mariners Academy before making his senior debut in 2021 and went on to make more than 90 appearances for the club across all competitions.
He has also represented Australia at Under-23 level and was part of the Olyroos squads at the 2022 and 2024 AFC U23 Asian Cups.
Farrell will join his new Sydney FC teammates in the coming days as the Sky Blues continue preparations for the 2026/27 Isuzu UTE A-League season.
