Aus Cup Preview: New striker could feature as Sky Blues target semis spot

Sydney FC are back in Australia Cup action tonight as they travel to Sydney’s Southwest to face NPL NSW 2 side SD Raiders in the 2026 Australia Cup quarter-finals.

The Sky Blues booked their spot in the quarters care of a thrilling 4-2 win over Brisbane Roar in the round of 16 with Takahiro Sekine, Ben Garuccio, Tiago Quintal and Gabriel Popovic scoring the goals in the impressive win.

Awaiting them at Fairfield Showground will be Southern Districts, who defeated Isuzu UTE A-League side Macarthur Bulls in a penalty shootout in the last round.

Already boasting plenty of firepower, Patrick Kisnorbo added Nigerian striker Oriola Sunday to his squad over the weekend.

The 23-year-old joins on a season-long loan from Japanese side RB Omiya, and is available to slot straight into the Sydney FC squad ahead of tonight’s game, although Kisnorbo did confirm a decision over the striker’s involvement would be made late on.

In other team news goalkeeper Harrison Devenish-Meares remains sidelined through injury.

The reigning Isuzu UTE A-League goalkeeper of the year underwent three seperate surgeries during the off-season to correct a vein issue in his arm, with the goalkeeper still yet to resume full training ahead of the campaign.

“First things first is his health, and we want to make it safe for him,” Kisnorbo said, when speaking on Monday morning. 

“It’s a long preseason which enables him to go through that process, and he’ll be returning in the next few weeks.”

Meanwhile exciting winger Abel Walatee is also sidelined, with Kisnorbo confirming the 22-year-old suffering a hamstring injury and is still some way off being ready for first team football.

“He was doing really well, but unfortunately he picked up an injury which has kept him out for a bit. Now, he’s sort of on the comeback, started a couple of training sessions just briefly.

“It’s unfortunate, the timing that he got injured, because he was doing really well. Now he’s on the road to recovery.”
