One of Brisbane Roar’s greatest servants is on the search for a new team, with confirmation captain Jay O’Shea has left the club.
The Roar confirmed O’Shea’s contract has now come to an end, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable stint that saw the Irishman establish himself as one of the most influential players in the club’s history.
Arriving from English side Bury ahead of the 2019-20 Isuzu UTE A-League season, O’Shea quickly became a cornerstone of Brisbane’s midfield and a fan favourite through his consistency, professionalism and leadership.

Over seven seasons, the midfielder developed into one of the club’s modern greats, eventually taking on the captaincy and becoming a key figure both on and off the field.
A creative spark in the Roar midfield, O’Shea went on to make over 150 A-League appearances for Brisbane Roar, one of only eight players in Club history to reach that milestone and ranking fourth in all-time Roar appearances.
O’Shea’s impact was recognised throughout his time at the Roar, earning multiple individual honours while also being selected in the PFA Team of the Season on two occasions and representing the A-Leagues All Stars.

Now an Australian citizen, O’Shea leaves Brisbane having become synonymous with the club during a period of significant change.
“Jay arrived in Brisbane as a quality footballer and leaves as a genuine Brisbane Roar great,” Brisbane Roar Chairman and CEO Kaz Patafta said.
“Three Gary Wilkins Medals, six Players’ Player awards and the captaincy of this football club are numbers that speak for themselves, but they don’t capture everything Jay has given us.
“His professionalism, his standards and the way he’s led this group, on and off the field, have shaped a new generation of players who’ve come through our club.
“On behalf of everyone at Brisbane Roar, I want to sincerely thank Jay for everything he has given us.

“We hope to have the opportunity at a home game in the 2026-27 season to recognise his contribution and give him the send-off he deserves in front of our members and fans.”
Chief Operating Officer Zac Anderson also highlighted the influence O’Shea had on younger members of the squad.

“Every day in training, every game, Jay set the standard,” Anderson said.
“Our younger players have learned what it means to be a professional by watching how Jay conducts himself.
“I want to thank Jay for his commitment to this club and to this team, and for the example he has set for everyone who wears our jersey.”
While O’Shea’s next move remains to be seen, his place in Brisbane Roar history is secure, departing as one of the most decorated and respected figures to pull on the orange shirt.
