Socceroos Reaction: Surprise selection stars

Key players from Australia’s 2-0 win at the FIFA World Cup against Turkiye speak about the game

Former and current Isuzu Ute A-League players were key to Australia’s win, with Melbourne City the common link between goalkeeper Patrick Beach and scorer of the Socceroos’ second goal Connor Metcalfe.

22-year-old Beach has been City’s undisputed starter for the past two Isuzu Ute A-League seasons, making 54 appearances. But his selection ahead of Socceroos captain Maty Ryan for a third cap was a major surprise.

Match Report: Australia 2-0 Turkiye

“Over the moon, buzzing with the result, buzzing with the boys, the staff, the amazing crowd, everyone back home in Australia,” Beach said after the match on SBS.

“We know what this result does for the sport and the whole country.

“I found out a few days ago and my immediate reaction was excitement and joy.

“Understanding of what my role was and having the backing from the boss and the boys as well instils me with a lot of confidence to play my game.”

Beach prevented Turkiye from scoring as they put eight shots on target from 30 total attempts.

“They were all good saves, I can’t remember half of them now it’s such a blur,” Beach said.

Connor Metcalfe had left Melbourne City before Beach made his Isuzu Ute A-League debut, but the club is the common link between the two Socceroos.

Metcalfe, who scored Australia’s second goal, played 73 Isuzu Ute A-League matches between 2017 and 2022 before joining German club St Pauli.

“When I saw that ball go in, the feeling that went through my body, I can’t explain it,” Metcalfe said.

“For it to be my first World Cup, my first game and to score, it can’t have gone any better.

“Honestly, I wasn’t really thinking. I just took the ball, didn’t even look at anyone else, looked up, seen the goal and just shot. Luckily it was just perfect placement, I’ll take that every day.

“I’m so proud of all the boys. The shift we just put in, we deserve it. It was unbelievable, everyone was switched on for 90 minutes. And when the subs came on they did their job. We’re going to have a good time in the change room and enjoy this win.

“We’re used to being the underdog, but with our mentality I think we can beat anyone.”

Australia’s next match at the FIFA World Cup is against co-host USA at 5am AEST on Saturday June 20.
