Glory and Mariners play out battling draw as Finals race heats up

Perth Glory and Central Coast Mariners battled hard but couldn’t be split on Saturday evening as they played out a 0-0 draw at the Sam Kerr Football Centre.

The Mariners saw a good chance go begging in the 20th minute as Millie Farrow couldn’t converted Tamar Levin’s cutback from the byline before Rola Badawiya then tested Mariners keeper Annalee Grove from distance.

Glory keeper Teresa Morrissey produced a brilliant save before the break as the leapt to her right to claw away Tamar Levin’s vicious strike from distance that was bound for the top corner.

Glory captain Isobel Dalton then tested Grove from range as she whipped a right-footed freekick towards the keeper’s near post but the Mariners’ custodian was equal to the effort.

Levin then had another crack at beating Morrissey from range but the keeper produced another outstanding save, tipping Levin’s powerful shot over the bar.

Levin was then involved again at the resulting corner as she slapped a shot against the crossbar as the Glory defence battled to clear their lines having previously scrambled a header off the line.

The home side cranked up the pressure late on and Sarah O’Donoghue wasted a glorious chance as her shot from close range was deflected out for a corner when it looked for the world that she would score.

Mariners defender Lorena Baumann was fortunate not to have been sent off in the 93rd minute as she scythed down Megan Wynne when the winger was through on goal but the referee opted to produce a yellow card and not a red.

The draw keeps both sides’ hopes of securing a finals place alive with Perth Glory sat 7th on the ladder, one point behind sixth-placed Brisbane Roar whilst the Mariners are two points further back in eighth.
