Adelaide go second with cagey win over Perth Glory

Adelaide United have gone second in the Ninja A-League Women after coming from behind to beat Perth Glory 2-1.

Rola Badawiya opened the scoring for the visitors after just 10 minutes, but Adelaide clawed it back thanks to goals from Fiona Worts and Sarah Morgan and a late red card for Onyinyechi Zogg.

The win lifts Adelaide to second in the Ninja A-League Women and within one point of leaders Melbourne City. Perth remain in fifth place, but are only one point ahead of Melbourne Victory down in eighth.

Having been denied a couple of minutes earlier, Rola Badawiya was played in by Emma Tovar and after wriggling past Zoe Tolland, fired her shot into the top left to give Perth the lead with 10 minutes played.

The hosts thought they had levelled the scoring after 25 minutes, but Fiona Worts was ruled to have strayed offside before she poked the ball beyond Teresa Morrissey.

The hosts only had to wait five minutes for another chance, when Emily Hodgson’s volley was bobbled up by Morrissey and Worts poked home the equaliser with her fourth goal of the season.

With the game approaching the hour mark, Sarah Morgan sent her in-swinging corner into a congested penalty area. Morrissey got buried in the crowd and the ball sailed in direct from the corner to give Adelaide the lead for the first time on the night.

Perth’s uphill battle was made significantly more difficult when, with ten minutes to play, Onyinyechi Zogg got tangled up with Lara Gooch and brought her down on the edge of the area. With no Perth defenders between Gooch and the goal, the referee sent Zogg off.
