Sydney smash winless streak with second half romp

Four second half goals to Sydney FC earned them their first win since November in a 4-0 victory over Brisbane Roar at a rainy Spencer Park.

Sydney FC hadn’t scored a single goal away from home this season at the start of the night, but by the end of it Mackenzie Hawkesby, Willa Pearson, Riley Tanner and Skye Halmarick had made it four.

Pearson became the youngest ever goalscorer in Ninja A-League history at 15 years and 51 days when she grabbed Sydney’s second goal of the night.

Both defences had plenty to do in the first half, though only Brisbane managed to get shots on target – Bente Jansen’s fourth minute mazy run in from the right created the clearest cut chance of the half, but the Dutchwoman put her shot straight at keeper Heather Hinz.

Sydney got the scoring underway at the start of the second half, Claire Corbett trapping Brisbane’s corner clearance in the penalty area before setting up Hawkesby to cut back onto her left foot and bury her shot in at the near post.

Sydney had their second when Abby Lemon’s deep cross from the left sat neatly in the gap between defenders and keeper for Pearson to poke home.

Tanner got in on the action in the 68th minute when Hawkesby’s long ball sent her in behind the defence on the left wing, the Panamanian striker able to run into the area place her finish in at the near post.

Sydney would put the result beyond all doubt in stoppage time when Halmarick rounded keeper Chloe Lincoln and rolled the ball into the open goal for her first Sydney FC goal.

Sydney get the bye week to recover and enjoy their win, while Brisbane will host Adelaide as they try and hang on to their place in the top six.
