Melbourne City pull off transfer coup as Socceroo Daniel Arzani returns on loan

Melbourne City have made another statement signing this January with news Socceroo Daniel Arzani has joined the club on loan until the end of the season.

Most recently with fierce rivals Melbourne Victory, Arzani heads back to Australia on loan from Hungarian club Ferencvárosi TC, whom he joined at the end of the 2024-25 campaign.

A graduate of the Melbourne City academy, Arzani will now don the City shirt once again after initially breaking through as a teenager in 2016.

During his first spell at the club Arzani quickly established himself as one of the most
prodigious young talents in Australian football and was even included in the Socceroos squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Now 27, Arzani returns to Melbourne having struggled to get first team minutes since making the move to Hungary and now finds himself in a battle to secure a spot in Socceroos head coach Tony Popovic’s squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“We’re at an important point in the season and bringing Daniel back gives us additional
quality and flexibility in attacking areas,” said Melbourne City FC Director of Football, Michael Petrillo.

“He knows the Club, understands what’s expected, and comes in ready to contribute straight away as we push for finals football domestically and continue our campaign in Asia.”

The 11-time Australian international becomes the second Socceroo to have signed for the club in the last week, following on from the loan signing of midfielder Ryan Teague.

“City is where my professional career started, so to be coming back here is something I’m
really excited about,” said Arzani, after putting pen-to-paper on his new deal.

“I’ve grown a lot since my first time at the Club and I’m excited to bring that experience back into this group.

“The goals for this season are clear, and I’m looking forward to doing my part to help the
team push deep into finals and on the continental stage.”

City fans will be hoping to catch a glimpse of their new signing when they face Macarthur Bulls at Campbelltown Sports Stadium on Saturday evening.
