Sydney’s goalless run extends to five games in Adelaide draw

Sydney FC's goalless run extends to five

Sydney FC’s goalless run has extended to five games with a 0-0 draw against Adelaide United at Leichhardt Oval.

A sparkling 20 minute cameo from Riley Tanner meant that the Sky Blues ended the game the better of the two sides, but unfortunately she couldn’t quite conjure up a goal for Sydney FC.

Adelaide nearly pinched the points late via Erin Healy from a 92nd minute corner, but her headed effort was cleared off the line by Amelia Cassar meaning that this fixture finished goalless for a second time this Ninja A-League season.

Tanner’s link up play with Skye Halmarick was a highlight after the Panamanian international’s introduction in the 72nd minute, with the duo creating a series of chances with pace and craft.

Tanner herself had Sydney’s best chance in the 80th minute when she went past Adelaide skipper Ella Tonkin and crashed a shot off the underside of the bar.

Adelaide had the better of the first half, with Emily Condon’s corners causing constant headaches for the Sydney defence.

Erin Healy also fashioned some long range chances for the Reds, while Adriana Taranto was typically industrious.

Adelaide’s 17-year-old goalkeeper Ilona Melegh kept her second consecutive clean sheet, while Sydney’s goalless run has now extended into its eighth hour.

Adelaide will be hoping to continue their good form next week with a fixture at home against Melbourne Victory on Saturday, while Sydney are next in action in the Big Blue on January 25.
