Nigerian attacker Chinaza Uchendu scored her first Ninja A-League goal as Melbourne City close in on the top of the table after victory over Sydney FC at ctrl:cyber Pitch.
Neither Melbourne City nor Sydney FC could fashion any clear cut chances early on, with both defences doing well to stifle the opposition.
Melbourne City began to look more dangerous in attack with the wind at their backs, first through Holly McNamara striking the crossbar, then Aideen Keane was denied twice by some desperate defending from Abby Lemon and a crucial save by Heather Hinz.
Sydney would get one major chance to close the first half, Hana Lowry forcing Melbourne City keeper Malena Mieres into a top class diving save.
Nigerian international Chinaza Uchendu would open the scoring for Melbourne City, Holly McNamara nodded down Rebekah Stott’s long pass into the path of Uchendu, who held off the Sydney defenders to score her first goal in the Ninja A-League.
The match opened up in midfield after the goal with Sydney FC trying more and more to find an equaliser. Ultimately, Melbourne City would hang on to the 1-0 victory.
This result takes Melbourne City up to second on the table, while Sydney FC’s fourth consecutive goalless match sees them stay in second last.
